Run the same task in both
Prepare a client project with five tasks, one dependency, a document and an external collaborator. Hold the inputs and acceptance criteria constant, and record the plan you used.
Assign owners and dates to a small project.
Change a dependency and inspect the effect on the delivery plan.
Invite a test guest and check what they can see.
Find a decision and its supporting document without asking a colleague.
How to reach a decision
Give the most weight to team adoption, task ownership. Record what you observed rather than treating a long feature list as a result. If neither tool passes your mandatory requirements, keep looking.
Calculate the effective cost per paid team member after configuration time and any required add-ons. A successful trial is a workflow your team can repeat and maintain.
Sources & scope
Product descriptions are based on official vendor pages consulted on 24 October 2026. The evaluation questions are our editorial framework. This is desk research, not a hands-on product test; plan details must be checked with the vendor.
Use a common pilot containing one parent deliverable, three assigned steps, two prerequisites, a cross-project shared item and an external review case. Write the intended identities, ownership, completion evidence and access before trying either product.
Then inspect import results, effective task visibility, field definitions and a controlled automation outcome. Similar labels do not prove identical behavior. Record actual observations and current plan constraints instead of scoring either product as faster or more reliable without comparable measured evidence. The Asana guides below help define one side of that trial.
Complete the ClickUp side of the same pilot
Keep the same five-request dataset and acceptance worksheet when evaluating ClickUp. Compare hierarchy reconciliation, relationship direction, completion behavior, field scope, external-reader access and the resulting export. Inspect Automation activity under the correct location filter before diagnosing a missing outcome.
Record observed behavior and current account constraints in both products. A matching task label or attractive dashboard does not prove equivalent behavior, and these source-based guides do not establish an unmeasured winner.
