Todoist calendar sync: map which edits create or change tasks

Validate Todoist calendar integration with a direction matrix, recurrence exceptions and a controlled test task.

SOURCE-BASED ANALYSIS · NO HANDS-ON RATING

Do not assume symmetrical synchronization

Todoist's Calendar integration documents different behavior for different edits. Adding a new calendar event does not create a Todoist task. Deleting a synced calendar event leaves the task, while canceling it removes the task. Single-instance recurrence edits have limitations. Confirm the intended operation before applying it to a live commitment.

Example: a weekly planning calendar

Assume a freelancer wants scheduled writing tasks visible beside meetings. The calendar is a planning surface, while Todoist holds the work queue. Write a small ownership contract: where new work originates, where schedule changes are allowed, and which action means cancellation. The visual presence of an event cannot answer those questions.

Use a disposable task named Calendar rehearsal and avoid an invitation with real attendees. Record its task identifier or URL and the corresponding event so that two similarly named items cannot be mistaken for one synchronized pair.

Validate operations independently

TrialQuestion to answer
Create a scheduled taskDoes the intended event appear?
Rename the linked eventDoes the task receive the edit?
Add an unrelated eventIs it clearly separate from task creation?
Change one recurrence instanceIs the documented exception understood?

Run one trial at a time and wait for synchronization before the next. Record the direction, original value and resulting value. A single successful rename does not establish that deletion, completion and recurrence all behave identically.

Keep recurring work in its own test

After a simple one-time task passes, create a separate recurring sample. Compare the recurrence rule and individual occurrences. If an exception does not propagate, choose one authoritative editing surface and document the limitation. Do not create replacement tasks until you have checked whether the original remains; otherwise you can introduce duplicate obligations.

Decide whether the integration fits

Accept it when the operations your workflow requires are understood and repeatable. If your requirement is to create tasks automatically from every calendar event, this particular sync contract does not meet that requirement on its own. Evaluate that need separately rather than treating event visibility as task capture.

Revisit the matrix after reconnecting accounts or changing calendars. Current feature availability and connection settings still need account-level checking. No synchronization experiment was performed for this guide; the matrix is a proposed acceptance test based on documented behavior.
